SeniorNet 2009 Special Report
SeniorNet:
Special Report -- 2009 Review
Last year, in the midst of a
national economic crisis with major corporations going bankrupt, the healthcare
issue, and unemployment reaching 10%, we stuck with our plan of providing
tangible value. Despite this turmoil and uncertainly we were able to better our
day to day operations, deliver a higher level of support to centers and provide
more benefits to our members.
SeniorNet continues to differentiate itself from
other organizations by having a dual focus. We strive to make centers stronger
and provide "value-add benefits" to our members.

Links to Happiness
The following is an excerpt of an article by
Gabriella Boston, originally published in The Washington Times, on November 4,
2009.
The Internet is a mixed bag of good, bad and ugly for the general
population. Not so for seniors, though, among whom the Internet is credited
with reducing depression, according to a new report. "There are significant
mental health consequences of Internet use for seniors," says George Ford, a
co-author of the report and a chief economist at the Phoenix Center, which
published it. "The study shows it reduces depression by up to 20 percent," Mr.
Ford says.
The Phoenix Center is a nonprofit Washington think tank that studies
the economics of high-tech industries. It study on Internet use and its
relationship to mental health in seniors was based on data provided by the
Health and Retirement Study of the University of Michigan. The sample set was
7,000 non-working seniors.
The study's conclusion is not surprising to retiree
Deana Brown, 70, who recently learned how to use a computer at a SeniorNet
computer workshop run by Emmaus Services for the Aging in the District.
SeniorNet is a nonprofit that provides low- to no-cost computer training for
seniors nationwide.
"Every time I sit down and surf the Internet, I have a new
window to the world," says Ms. Brown, who is learning how to create greeting
cards on the computer.
Being able to experience adventures virtually is
particularly important for someone like Ms. Brown, who uses a cane and has
limited mobility. She says she also uses the Internet to research prescriptions
and communicate and exchange pictures with her sister in Pennsylvania.
Social
isolation is a well-established and widespread threat to the mental health of
the aging population. One specialty at SeniorNet is teaching seniors how to
communicate better and unite virtually -- through pictures, videos and text --
with friends and families divided by geographic distance, says John Alger,
interim executive director for SeniorNet.
"Social interaction is key," Mr. Alger
says, adding that the report's findings jibe perfectly with what he has seen "on
the ground."
But what exactly is it about the Internet that helps reduce
depression? Is it improved communication or something else?
That part is not
scientifically proved yet, Mr. Ford says, but he adds that it probably has to do
with a sense of connectedness and belonging for the Internet-using senior that
in turn yields a sense of relevance.
Mr. Ford is working on the next phase of
the study, which aims to show exactly what aspects of the Internet are at work
in alleviating depression. Release is planned for later this year.
It all makes
sense to the Rev. Joseph K. Williams Sr., who runs Emmaus Services for the
Aging.
"When you stay active and connected, it helps promote mental and physical
health," Mr. Williams says. "The computer lab - and using the Internet in
general - are just part of that," he says, adding that the seniors also get a
lot out of their "real-life" interactions with other seniors during the computer
lab classes. For complete article, read below:

Huntington - Celebrating 10 Years of Service
TEN YEARS
YOUNG
SeniorNet at FSL, L.I. (SN at FSL) has reached a proud milestone - it is
10-years YOUNG. Young, because while many organizations its age would have
already seen its' best years, SN at FSL's list of achievements is still growing.
Since 1999, when its founders first met, it has blossomed into a thriving
organization that operates two centers - the main one in Huntington NY and an
Annex just opened in East Yaphank, NY. It currently has over 100 active
volunteers who offer 27 computer courses annually while they and their
predecessors taught an astounding 5,000+ students in the past decade. For the
Fall 2009 semester, 12 different courses will be taught in 17 separate sessions.
In addition, for the first time, homebound students will be provided LIVE
instruction on their home computers via internet connection. SN at FSL was
named the #1 Learning Center in SeniorNet's worldwide organization receiving the
2007 Chairman Award in Excellence and it was the recipient of the Chairman 2008
Exemplary Award. After 10-years one might think that SN at FSL would be
fatigued and on the decline. The opposite is of course true. The question is -
Why?

Partnering with AT&T Again
!!!!
We are very excited to work with AT&T in their ongoing
efforts to educate seniors on wireless technology.
Earlier this month, Learning
Center Coordinators were contacted via
Circle of Friends and invited to
participate on a joint (AT&T and SeniorNet) conference call that will occur on
October 7th & 8th. The purpose of these conference calls is to lay the
groundwork for our centers to participate.
All centers must register for the
conference call before October 2nd.
The actual AT&T education includes one -on
-one coaching by AT&T volunteers. Seniors can bring in their phones -- no
matter which carrier they are with -- and ask any questions they wish, from
instructions on text messaging, setting up voicemail and various best practices
for inbound and outbound calling.
*** Special Message to the thousands of
valuable SeniorNet Volunteers and Members .....please follow up with your
center leaders to get the details about this offering from AT&T.
We look forward
to seeing some great pictures from these sessions.
Thanks

Help with Vision
Loss Problems
Vision Problems Affect Over 20 Million People In
This Country
Vision loss in the U.S. is rapidly becoming a crisis of epidemic
proportions since large numbers of older persons are experiencing age related
vision loss from such conditions as macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy,
glaucoma, and cataracts (afb.org/seniorsite/understandingvisionloss). People
with vision loss are twice as likely to fall and twice as likely to break a hip
when they fall. Loss of vision affects all areas of every day life such as
driving, reading, and even taking prescriptions.
These problems are not
insurmountable. The American Foundation for the Blind has developed an online
information center (afb.org/seniorsite) that provides commonsense solutions to
living with vision loss. It offers hope, help and encouragement to both people
experiencing vision problems and their family members
(afb.org/seniorsite/familyguide) and provides links to local agencies that can
help (afb.org/seniorsite/directory)
For more information about demographic
information pertaining to seniors with vision loss, visit AFB's Statistical
Snapshots at www.afb.org/stats.

Foundation for the Blind, please visit the AFB section of the SeniorNet site.

Words from the Chairman...
Undoubtedly, 2008 will be remembered as one for the history books. From
the
global economic slowdown to political change, the uncertainties have been
rapid
and relentless. Some of our centers are faced with unprecedented
challenges
– and they need our help more than ever.
Earlier this year we announced
the SeniorNet Advisory Council. This
council was created to provide insight,
advice and counsel to HQ Staff and
the Board of Directors. I have had the
opportunity to interact with the
council members individually and during council
conference calls, and it is
abundantly clear that their contributions have been
significant . They
have been candid in sharing their opinions of our operations,
plans and
future direction.
Their overall value add has been a tremendous
asset to SeniorNet going
forward.
We urge you to get to know these leaders.
Their expertise may help you in
growing your center.
