What makes our School Different?

Leith Primary is an amazing and historic building
right on the edge of Leith Links.  Although the building hosts a number of
different users the school has very spacious and flexible accommodation.  There
are music rooms, a games room, a library and an art and practical room.
The
school truly reflects its catchment area.  We are proud of the diversity of the
children and families we serve.  We are proud of the quality of education we
provide for all children. We have an excellent record in providing care, support
and challenge for all pupils.  We promote positive behaviour, respect for all
and encourage a positive attitude to learning.

P3/4 Little Giants Workshop

At
our Science Show called Little Giants we learned so much about bees.  We
pretended we were bees collecting nectar from flowers to make into honey.
The
Waggle Dance was fun to do and it's just like the bees do to tell all the other
bees that there is nectar in the flowers. While the bees collect the nectar
pollen stick to their feet and legs. They have a stinger but they don't want to
sting you as they could die. Bees have a thorax and abdomen on their body. We
are going to do some more activities in class about bees. By Jessica and

Friends of Leith

We would like to invite parents
to come along to the meetings we have at the school.  The meetings are very
informal and we plan after school activities, fundraising events and any other
issues which arise. We are currently fundraising to provide an exciting
playground environment and the pupils have been involved in the plans, as have
the pupils. The meetings are held every couple of months and the next one will
be on the 17th March at 7pm.
Should you not want to come along to the meetings,
perhaps you would like to get involved with specific events? We are planning a
stall and hopefully being in the parade at Leith Gala this year, but we need
help with this, from planning, art work, help on the day, help on the stall and
home baking. If you can help, please fill in the form below and state what you
would like to help with.
Also as homebaking is always a popular fundraiser we
are looking for volunteers. The plan is to have a list of those who we could ask
to provide us with tasty treats.
In particular, we are asking parents to help
provide home baking for Leith Gala day (Saturday 12th June), we anticipate that
this will raise a substantial amount of money for the school and playground and
we would appreciate help in providing this. Please let a member of the parents
council know if you can help, or one of the teachers. All help is appreciated.

FoLP challenge  CAKE STALLS

FoLP
are
challenging each class to a 'bake off'. The idea is that every
week each class
runs a baking stall at noon each Friday and the class
who raise the most money
will win a special prize.  The money
collected will go towards resources to
support learning for each
class.
 
Below
there is a chart with the dates each
class will have their stall. 
All food must be labelled with a description and
items placed in
bags.  Tables will be provided, pupils will provide the tastiest
if
treats and see who can raise the most money. A couple of parents are
required
to help on each stall ( to maintain health and safety!!). 
Please see below for
the name of your class rep should you want to be
involved.

Budongo project link to Leith

Leith Primary is going to be
joining up with a school in Uganda.
The project was started by Edinburgh Zoo
when they went to the Budongo Forest to monitor and complete research on the
chimpanzees that live there and help with conservation projects. Following these
visits they began to come into contact with a local school on the edge of the
forest who expressed an interest in a linking project with schools in Edinburgh.

The school recently moved buildings as the old building was too close to the
forest as the baboons were frightening the children and stealing their lunches
and the chimpanzees were also getting a bit too close. The education team at the
zoo are in contact with the education outreach team at Budongo.  James from
Edinburgh Zoo came into Leith this week to talk to 4 classes about the school
and to start the link.  Soon children will begin to write to each other from
both schools and we hope all sorts of amazing learning will result from this
exciting project.

Primary 5 and the
Doctor				
Friday, 29 January 2010            
On Tuesday P5 had a visit from
Dr. Wilson as part of our ‘Fever' topic. We got to wear real doctors masks
and hats. We used a stethoscope to listen to Jatin's heart. We did a quiz and
learnt about what it is like being a doctor.
