Seasonal Influenza & H1N1
Information									
The  seasonal flu and H1N1 flu can be unpredictable
and can spread easily from person to person.  School-age children are among the
groups most  affected as the H1N1 flu. As a District, Socorro ISD is not being
complacent because  of the decrease in the reported cases, we are still taking 
proactive measures to prevent the spread of illness in your child’s school and
we continue to need your help.
We  are working closely with local health
officials to monitor flu conditions and  to make the best decisions regarding
our schools. We are doing everything we can  to protecting the health and safety
of students, staff and the community. Our  operational staff continues to clean
and disinfect all school buildings and  buses daily. In addition, all campus
nurses are prepared to identify and assist  students and staff that may become
ill while at school. Finally, we are  stressing the importance of good hygiene
habits while at school and home to help  prevent the spread of flu.  
These  are
a few things you can do to help your family.
Teach your  children to wash their
hands often with soap and water. 
Teach your  children to cover their coughs and
sneezes with tissues or by coughing or sneezing into  the inside of the elbow,
not their hands.
Teach your children not to share  personal items like drinks,
food, or unwashed utensils.
Know the signs  and symptoms of the flu.  Symptoms 
include fever of at least 100 degrees Fahrenheit or 37.8 degrees Celsius, 
cough, sore throat, a runny or stuffy nose, body aches, headache, and feeling 
very tired.  Some people may also vomit  or have diarrhea.
Keep your sick 
children out of school until they are symptom-free for at least 24 hours,
without fever-reducing medication.   Please let your school nurse know that your
child is out with flu-like  symptoms when calling to report an absence.   As
with any illness, we encourage you to consult with your child’s  health care
provider.
Check with your  health care provider about getting yourself and your
children vaccinated for seasonal (regular) flu  now and H1N1 flu when
available.
Contact the City  of El Paso Department of Public Health to schedule
an appointment to receive a free  H1N1 vaccines for your family members by
calling 771-5759 from 8:00 am to 5:00  pm.
